call for global meditationTo say the least, this has been a rough time, GLOBALLY. The negative energies have been building and building. Leading up to now; we’ve seen a frightening escalation of war, strife, political discord, division and hate, and now the extreme weather, floods, and fire…

I won’t go on because to do so would be overstating the obvious.

Up until now, I’ve been in a state of angst, not knowing how to help, feeling helpless and useless.

But we AREN’T helpless and it’s time for action. What can we do?

We can all join in and utilize the group meditation effect! You can Google this effect for yourself if you don’t believe it works (it does). It is scientifically proven! Don’t poo-poo this. Our power is great if we band together.

Before you get up in arms and say, “all the woo-woo ‘I’m praying for you’ and ‘I lit a candle’ isn’t helpful”… I agree 100%! Obviously I am not suggesting we ONLY meditate or lend our help energetically.

If you are close enough to lend a hand where it is needed physically, absolutely, do that!  If you have the resources to send money to organizations you trust who can get the funds to the people who need it, do that!  ABSOLUTELY!

On top of these things, what I AM ALSO suggesting is that we use our power and join forces to make a global impact. The “Powers That Be” have convinced us over years of programming that we are not powerful creator beings. WE ARE!  In that light:

CALL TO GLOBAL MEDITATIONI have committed to meditate at the top of every hour, just for a few minutes, fully focused and lending healing, calming energy.

I am visualizing the water dispersing where there is too much, the fires being put out, hurricanes diminishing and flooding eased. The people, animals, plants, trees and land being safe.

Globally. The need is greater than we can individually reach physically with our bodies or monetarily with our donations. Energetically, together we can make a difference!

I liken it to sending Reiki energy to our great Mother and all her inhabitants (including the Elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water).

It only takes 144,000 of us to lend our energy collectively to make a difference. This is an EASY number to reach!

If #1 you aren’t close enough to physically help and #2 have already donated or simply don’t have enough to donate, then this is something you CAN do. Right now, from the comfort of your own home (or work). It only takes a few minutes. Watching the news and seeing the devastation that they show us and predict is feeding the fire. Instead, see these storms diminishing. See the fires going out. See the people, animals, plants, trees and earth safe and thriving.

Lend a hand physically if you are close. Donate whatever resources you can spare. And then

Please share this and JOIN ME! Do what I have done and set an alarm to go off on the hour. Spend whatever time you can meditating toward this goal. It doesn’t have to be fancy and doesn’t have to take loads of time. I only spend a few minutes, but it is intense and I am fully present. I plan to do this every hour, 9am to 9pm. If we do this across the globe, with our different time zones, the whole 24 hour time period will be well covered.

Hello all! I have been ruminating on the upcoming total solar eclipse. It is sure to mean a lot to the United States since it is going right across us (time to step out of our shadow, right, U.S.?), but also certainly important globally. This post has been shifting and squirming in my mind for several days and it is finally deciding it is time to be born into the light… (pun intended)… I don’t know about you, but I have been having some trouble putting my thoughts into words lately. My thoughts are so much bigger than my words that I get tripped up and end up remaining silent instead, since the words just aren’t adequate.

Typically I tend not to say much politically, mainly because there is SO much going on, (not just here, but all over the world) that one couldn’t possibly mention it all… and it all needs mentioning. So much pain and strife, so much suffering, so many dynamics at play. Here in the US we are (still) having a time with hate and bigotry and so much more unspeakable awfulness (the United States has a long history of awfulness). Today in Hot Springs Arkansas, they are having a “gathering” of the KKK and others who were present in Charlottesville Virginia to protest the removal of statues commemorating the confederacy, erected mostly during the times of the Civil Rights Movements. Sending prayers for a peaceful demonstration in Hot Springs today.

Without getting into all of it in detail, suffice it to say that the pain we are seeing, that touches us and our loved ones, that makes us sick in our soul to even think about, much less to experience… all has a purpose and meaning on our paths.

The eclipse is a reminder that all of this pain and discord that we see… all of it… IS us. It is me, and it is you. It isn’t “other”. It isn’t “them”, or “those people over there”. IT IS US. Let that soak in for a minute.

It. Is. Us.

Maybe, since the path of totality of the eclipse is touching all of the United States (U.S.), this is the Universe’s way of giving us a heads up and a reminder that it is US. It is our shadow and must be seen, felt, embraced and released.

My knee-jerk reaction to all of these horrors happening in the world is to scream: “This is not me! I am not this hate and divisiveness, this pain and suffering. This pushing back and snatching and grabbing and yelling, ‘mine!’ This killing, blame and bigotry!” But truth is, it IS me. We are all one. So I AM the “good” AND the “bad”. So what does this mean? I must work to lovingly embrace this shadow side of myself so that it may be more easily released. I must acknowledge it so it may stop screaming for attention.

So in light of this rumination, my plans for the eclipse have morphed as I read and learn and study, as I ask for and receive guidance. I have watched my plans go from outer, to inner. In my plans, I see a pulling in, physically, and ultimately spiritually. To explain this, initially, I was going to go out and “watch”. We planned to travel 7 hours to central Missouri to be closer to the path of totality. Then we scaled our plans back and decided to go an hour north and watch with family in Northwest Arkansas. Today I have scaled back even more, and have decided that Monday will instead be a day for INNER contemplation. I’m not sure if I will even go outside. Certainly I won’t be looking at the sun. In reading the shifting of my plans you can see the act of pulling in!

I am viewing this eclipse now as a time for embracing my shadow, my neighbor’s shadow, the world’s shadow. My day will be spent in prayer, in meditation. I will spend the time leading up to and during the actual eclipse embracing the shadow, seeing it as myself and my hidden thoughts and negativities, and then I will see the light, the love and goodness returning to us. Instead of going outside and watching the moon overtake the sun, I plan to be inside, fully expressing, loving, embracing and releasing the shadow, followed by visualizing and envisioning the LIGHT (aka goodness, hope, and LOVE) bursting out.

The Crystal People have been and are working on our behalf, raising vibrations and assisting humanity and the planet. I will be joining them in my meditations Monday. I am sure they will be joining in with us. Be aware of your Crystal Friends. Include them in your thoughts. Thank them for their tireless service!

I have been reading some excellent articles, and I encourage you to follow the links below and read them as well, they may be of benefit. The first is an excerpt written by Sam Littlefair in Two Practices for Times of Tragedy. This article outlines teachings from Tibetan Buddhist teacher Pema Chödrön and Zen teacher Bernie Glassman:

Times are difficult globally,” explains Pema. “Awakening is no longer a luxury or an ideal. It’s becoming critical.” Bernie sees practice in a similar light, saying we can use meditation to “get involved in the healing of the earth, in the making whole of the human race.”

The next excerpt is from Everything We Do Matters, But Two Things Are Critical, by Zen teacher and Unitarian Universalist minister James Ishmael regarding the recent events in Charlottesville VA but which applies to cruelties all over the world:

Yes, these are dangerous, dangerous times. There’s a temptation to join those who would just burn it down, hoping that maybe something good might rise from the ashes. But what rises from ashes is usually just dust, and bones, and more ash. We have the capacity to do better.

“We have met the enemy, and he is us. We have met the friend, and he is us. That is the secret that will win the ultimate victory, if anything will. And this is our way. Looking inward, and reaching out a hand and acting. Heart with heart, and hand in hand, we will build a community of hope and possibility.”

We are born out of each other and this world. We live among all things as part, fully a part, with no extra part not of it. And when we fall, we fall together. Intimate.

In conclusion, there are many many people planing global meditations on this day, Monday August 21st, 2017, and as Lightworkers, it is our honor and duty to join in, in whatever way we can. I can’t encourage your participation enough. A quote from the Global Unity Peace Meditation:

By reaching a critical mass of 144,000 people doing this meditation will create a massive healing chain reaction in the energy field worldwide.

PS if you need “proof” that the Universe is behind us on this, my eye was drawn to when the last revision of this post was made, which was a completely “random” clicking of the “save draft” button: REVISIONS: Genn, 1 min ago (August 19, 2017 @ 11:11:11)

WOW. We can do this. See you on the other side!

display and enjoy your crystalsFirst, what is a Lightworker? Lightworkers are healers, masters and servants of humanity who have contracted to come back at this time, when we know we can be of the most service. We come in all shapes and sizes, with many different skill sets and areas of expertise, with the common goal of service; service to mankind, service to the Earth and all of her many inhabitants. To be sure, it’s not an easy task for which we have signed up. While many of us have had difficult life experiences as part of our path, our learning, it has all been a necessary part of the greater plan.

We are beginning to awaken to our purpose now, during this time of great change, as the new era begins. It is both a scary and exciting time we are in. Soul contracts, both individual and as a group, are what we are playing out. Look to your fellow Lightworkers, take their hands and know that together we can do anything!

According to the Maya, Hopi and other indigenous peoples, with tradition passed on from generation to generation, this is the end of a cycle 28 thousand years long. This knowledge and these stories have been passed, hand to hand, not unlike the continuity of knowledge within the Crystal People.

While humankind has not spanned the eons encompassed by the life of the crystals, we have lived well into the thousands of lifetimes. Most of humanity’s knowledge, however, is broken up as memories that have been made, and forgotten, over and over again, but our souls have not forgotten. Humanity’s collective consciousness has held this knowledge safe for all of us. It is into this that we are tapping during the birth of this new era.

With the help of our Crystal Friends, Angels and Guides, we will raise our vibrations as the vibration of the planet increases as She ascends. It is our responsibility to help increase and then to help maintain the increased vibration that will be required for a successful completion of this cycle, thereby leading into the beginning of the next. By working with our personal crystals, and connecting with crystals still deep within the earth, we can assist this vibratory increase.

It has been a time of increasing turmoil, fear and uncertainty, globally; and we’re being fed a daily diet of the same from the mainstream media. I’m intentionally not mentioning specific events or people, because there are so many horrible things in the news (happening daily) I couldn’t possibly list them all (just as there are that many good things happening, on both the small scale and large). If you haven’t already, I suggest taking (at least) a daily break from the fear conditioning, and if you are already doing this, consider re-doubling your efforts. I suggest, instead, spending some time meditating, enjoying nature or communing with your Crystal Friends. I don’t mean adopt a “Pollyanna” attitude and ignore what is happening politically and globally, but I do suggest balancing the time spent. It’s good to remind ourselves that there is a LOT more good going on than bad.

So much turmoil and sadness seems to be bubbling to the surface, like the baking soda and vinegar volcanoes of our youth… just as with the science project volcanoes, as long as we stop adding ingredients, the bubbling will slow and, finally, cease. I’m working on not adding vinegar to the soda wounds which seem to be opened daily. I am told we are burning off a lot of karma and working through (and thus releasing) old patterns which no longer serve. So, during these times, look to the good, and more importantly, send love to those who seem impossibly hard to love right now. They need it.

CRYSTAL MURAL WALLPAPER from MuralsWallpaper.com (Part 2)

Crystal mural from MuralsWallpaper.com

Crystal mural from MuralsWallpaper.com

Hello again! This is the last of a two part ‘series’ on a crystal mural we recently hung in our home. If you missed part one (the hanging process) you can read that here.

In this post I want to talk a bit about the wallpaper pattern I chose and why I chose it.

Venus (my Crystal Guide) also will weigh in on the benefits of pictures of crystals such as this mural.

As I said in the last post, I was approached by Anna Fell of Murals Wallpaper about some crystal murals she has. I took a look at all the different styles she had to offer and I fell in love with this one (pictured left). It is called “Rose Crystal Wallpaper”, but for those of you in the know, these are actually Lemurian Seed Crystals.

finished Crystal mural from MuralsWallpaper.comThough many of the crystals pictured are, all of the crystals aren’t Laser Wands like we have come to expect of most Lemurian Seed Crystals we see, but there are other clues leading us to that conclusion. Some of the clues are: the light pinkish coloring is typical of some Brazilian Lemurian Seed crystals, they also have the striations (Lineation), there are some Laser Wands (wider at the base and narrower at the point) and they also have the kind of sand-blasted look typical of Lemurian Seed Crystals.

As an added bonus, some of the crystals pictured are Smoky (Smoky crystals are good for grounding), and simply aesthetically speaking, the smoke color pulls the pink down a bit, keeping it from being too foo-foo. Other features to note, there is also a nice Window on one of them, there is a Twin or Soulmate, a Generator or Merlin, lots of Fairy Frost and some Barnacles.

This is definitely an aside, but I get questions about “seed crystals” often (particularly Lemurian Seed Crystals), and very recently have had several questions about them. Here’s a very recent example of a question that prompted this discussion, followed by my response:

Question: “Since Arkansas was one of the seed places for the Lemurian, Atlantean crystals, have you ever mined any Lemurian crystals and have any for sale?”

My Answer: “From what I understand from reading and studying over the years, the crystals typically referred to as “Lemurian” Seed crystals are found in Brazil, and were given this name according to the crystals found in a certain area there (that have a certain look, structure, etc)… That being said, I suppose one could TECHNICALLY say many of the crystals found (all over the world, and Arkansas specifically) are “seed” crystals (crystals which were seeded).

However, the crystals typically called Lemurian Seed Crystals tend to be Laser wands with heavy lineation and occasional etching, and usually come from Brazil. I have found Laser wands in Arkansas which would qualify as Lemurian Seed Crystals, though they don’t have the sort of sandblasted look that some of the Lemurian Seed Crystal’s from Brazil have. My Crystal Guide Venus is whispering in my ear that many, many crystals are “seed” crystals, and humans have given only crystals with certain shapes the name Lemurian Seed Crystal. This doesn’t make other crystals NOT seed crystals by not fitting the definition.” (Just because a crystal doesn’t fit the “typical” definition of a Lemurian Seed Crystal, doesn’t mean it is not.)

That’s sort of a tangent and not really on topic for this post about the mural, but it came to mind and now’s as good a time as any to share that tidbit. There will be an upcoming post further exploring the topic of Lemurian Seed Crystals. Stay tuned!

At any rate, regarding the mural and crystal types, what does all this mean? Well, bottom line, (Venus enters my consciousness and answers the question)…

…the TYPE of crystal presented isn’t as important as the ability for you (and others viewing the mural) to access the energy of the crystals. Do they resonate? Do they add a pleasing aesthetic to the space? As we know, it isn’t necessary to connect with a crystal only by holding it physically. Just as you are able to connect with a person, the energy of a person, through a photograph, you can also connect to the Crystal Kingdom through a photograph. Imagine the crystals on Genn’s website, there are some that resonate with you immediately and you know you have a heart connection before you even “meet” in person. It can be the same with a mural such as the one dears Genn and Patti installed and of which we are speaking. The energy of the crystal is there to access. We are not static, or ‘stuck’ in a crystalline body as it were. We are energy, light and formless. Our crystal bodies give us a way to work with you in this 3-D space/time continuum. But we also work with you in Spirit, in Energy, in Formlessness. We are accessible to you at all times and in all ways. It is beautiful to utilize something such as a large image of our crystalline forms (bodies) to help you to connect to us in a non 3-D, non linear way.

So! That was fun! Thank you, Venus!

It’s what we know innately. That images speak to us. They have the ability to pluck our emotions and stir our souls. To evoke emotions and raise vibrations. So why not select an image which feeds your soul, and what better way to feed your soul than with a whole WALL of crystal!?

I hope you have enjoyed reading about the journey of hanging this new mural as much as I have enjoyed the process (and the outcome)! A big thank you to Anna Fell of Murals Wallpaper for this lovely mural, thanks to Venus for weighing in with her thoughts, big thanks to my partner Patti for helping me to transform our new home and thank you for sharing the experience with us!

Maybe after reading this you will want a beautiful crystal mural of your own! Stay tuned for a discussion on Lemurian Seed Crystals and more all about crystals. I welcome your input and comments.

first panel on the floor, getting ready to hang

Well, guys, the next two posts will be a departure from the norm for me. I was approached by Anna Fell of Murals Wallpaper, well, because I love crystals and she has crystal wallpaper. I took a look at all the different styles she had to offer and I fell in love with the one they call “Rose Crystal Wallpaper“.

Anna sent me the wallpaper to try out and here I am letting you know what I think! This isn’t a technical “how-to” blog post but more like a “hey check this out” update. There is plenty of the technical “how to” on Anna’s website, USA, website here and UK, website here. After reading this, you may find you would like a crystal mural of your very own!

The mural came safely packaged, rolled in a long cardboard tube (pictured right, partially unrolled). Each of the panels is 4 feet wide, and each panel is numbered in the order in which they hang on the wall (my wall is 8 feet x 8 feet).

The texture of the paper is flexible but very thick, it almost feels like fabric. I assume it is vinyl or something (what do they make wallpaper out of, anyway)!? It has a luxurious look and feel.

The thought of hanging the mural was a little daunting, because I have never hung wallpaper, so I was a little nervous about the whole process initially. Also, our house is old, with many layers of paint and holes from nails and tacks from hanging pictures over the years, so there was quite a bit of prep work to get the wall ready to receive the crystal mural. Start to finish, it really wasn’t all that bad! Here are a few pictures of the process:

Filling holes, removing trim and baseboards and sanding, oh my!

Prepping the wall

Putty anyone? How about paint?

Putty and paint!

Next is a view of the wall, prepped and ready, with Elizabeth supervising, of course! (Ugh! Even after all that work, it still looks kind of terrible!)

getting there! (Hi Elizabeth!)

The next step was to unroll the entire mural since each panel is printed on one continuous roll. The panels are marked and you simply cut them apart. They are also numbered so you know which piece goes up first.

The paper cut easily with a pair of scissors.

The panels are laid out on the floor to be sure they match (and of course, they do). Next you flip them over and wet the backs with a sponge. While bending over to do this, I discovered the floor is a LOT further away than it was when I was younger. Let the grunting, grumbling and complaining begin!

panels laid out side by side to see that they match

Patti is coating the newly prepped walls with wallpaper paste as I grunt and complain while I damp the backs of the panels. I didn’t take pictures of the wrangling process because it took both of us to get it up there properly. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it might be, but it was a bit tricky. If you have all the tools recommended on the website, you shouldn’t have a problem.

It took some work to get the panels up evenly without bubbles. However, all in all, it was a fairly easy process, and completely worth the work it took to get it done. My gauge on whether something is too much trouble is whether I would do it again, given the choice. With this wallpaper, I absolutely would. If you would like a beautiful crystal mural in your home but you are a little fearful about wallpaper, I would definitely recommend it. Check out MuralsWallpaper.co.uk or MuralsWallpaper.com and tell Anna that Genn sent you. It was a smooth and enjoyable transaction, start to finish!

Miss fancy-pants, Elizabeth T (for Taylor)

Elizabeth the Pomeranian said if it didn’t come out looking great that she would say she had nothing what-so-ever to do with it! As you will see in the following photo, she is very proud and claims the work as her own.

There are many other murals offered at Murals Wallpaper, not just crystal murals. In part two of this post I talk a bit about the wallpaper pattern I chose and Venus (my Crystal Guide) wants to weigh in on the benefits of pictures of crystals. So, I’ll see you in the next post! And, without further ado, here is a look at the completed mural (and one proud Elizabeth)!

An Example of How to Work With a Particular Crystal

I got a question today from a friend about a new crystal they adopted. They told me their Higher Self asked them to buy this crystal to help with their channeling and wondered if I had any tips. As I was composing the email, I decided that the information might be helpful to others, so I turned the reply into a blog post. I hope you find this helpful.

Anyway…. following is what I had to suggest about how to work with a new crystal. I will break the description up and italicize the parts and indent my answer to help you follow along. This is the description of the crystal in question:

crystal 01005 This is a water clear Arkansas quartz crystal Transmitter point. It has just a bit of wispy Fairy Frost towards the base. The sides are heavily Lineated and there are deeply penetrating Inner Child points and Keys. There is just a bit of Drusy on it. It has a very sliver-thin Time Link to the Future. When held in my non-dominant hand the energy was fairly light, when switched to my dominant hand, it was strongly pulsing and a pressure behind my third eye.

When held in my non-dominant hand
First, when you decide to work with your new crystal friend, determine the way it wants to be held. You do this by experimenting with different hand holds. I always start with my receptive hand, which is the non dominant hand (left for right handed people, right for left). I tend to start with the receptive hand because I desire to “receive” information. Typically, I place the crystal on its “back”, facing out. This means I place the main face upright, with the base pointing to my wrist, with my pinky curled around the bottom, the termination pointing to the fingertips with my index finger cradling the top. Not every crystal wants to be held like this. You will know because it will not feel comfortable. There may be bridges or outcroppings or sharp areas which want to be on top, rather than underneath, etc. To find the right hold, simply turn the crystal until it feels comfortable. If you aren’t able to find a comfortable spot, try your other hand, and also experiment with the terminating end facing in different directions. I sometimes do this and return to the hand I began with, it is all in the experimentation of getting to know your crystal. It is also helpful to try different pressures. Some crystals like to be held tightly, some more loosely, with a hand hovering over the top. Continue to experiment until you find just the right hold. You can be sure your crystal will be guiding you as you do this.

the energy was fairly light, when switched to my dominant hand, it was strongly pulsing and a pressure behind my third eye.

The next thing to consider is energy. Do this by beginning with what I call the “check in”. It is basically determining your baseline BEFORE you pick up your crystal to begin learning each other. When you are ready, set your crystal aside and go within. See what your body feels like in its current state. Does it feel light, heavy or neutral? Do you experience seeing certain colors or do you hear certain sounds? This is your baseline. Now, you pick up your crystal, find the comfortable handhold, and then go inside and see what is different. Do you feel a lightness or heaviness which you didn’t feel before? If you were anxious, do you feel more calm? If you were tired, do you feel energized? Do you experience a throbbing, vibration or tingling in hands, fingers, feet or head? If you are a visual person, do you see different colors or if you are auditory, do you hear different things? All of these variations are your crystal communicating with you. You may notice a difference with a particular chakra like I noticed in my description of the crystal or you may experience something completely different. This is a good place to begin with your crystal, you learning its vibration or signature, and it learning yours.

Next you move on to the other parts of the description (perhaps during this session, perhaps not until several sessions in)… there is no rush! Remember your crystal will be here for a long time and you will have plenty of time to explore each other.

Now, let’s continue breaking down the original description of this crystal:

crystal 01005 This is a water clear Arkansas quartz crystal Transmitter point.

Being a Transmitter (7-3-7), it has a different energy and orientation than a non-Transmitter point. Normally a crystal’s main face is the largest face. However, the main face on a Transmitter is different. In a Transmitter, the two 7-sided faces and the triangle between are the main faces (as it is pictured in the photograph left). Imagine two sentinels standing guard diagonally next to each other, protecting the “three” which feels like a portal or door. (If you want a refresher on Transmitters, CLICK HERE and a new window will open in your browser.)

. . .there are deeply penetrating Inner Child points and Keys.

Inner Child crystals (the smaller crystals partially in and partially out of the main crystal) are good for accessing your Inner Child. They are simply small Bridges… so they may also be used to Bridge between yourself and your Higher Self. (If you want a refresher on Bridge/Inner Child crystals, CLICK HERE.)

Keys help us to answer questions such as “why can’t I…?” or “why do I …?” Imagine a Key as you would an actual key. What do keys do? They help us gain access to areas which we couldn’t access without the key… they open doors, they open areas which are locked, etc. (If you want a refresher on Keys, CLICK HERE.)

There is just a bit of Drusy on it.

Drusy is a form of Barnacles, tiny seeds of crystals… Drusy energy says to me “thought forms ready to spring forth and grow” “seeds”… (If you want a refresher on Drusy, CLICK HERE.)

It has a very sliver-thin Time Link to the Future.

The sliver-thin Time Link to the Future may also be accessed as a portal. What I do with windows (this is a right activation window), is become very familiar with them so that I can see the window in my mind’s eye when I close my eyes. I get in a meditative state, put my finger or thumb on the window, then visualize the window in my mind’s eye. The crystal becomes very huge and I become very small. Enter the window in whatever way feels natural with that particular shape (climb in, or fly in, or become light, energy or consciousness and flow through, etc)… You may access the inside of a crystal this way to explore the inner world of Fairy Frost and other internal structures as well. Venus (my crystal guide) has also helped me to realize that when you enter a window (or any other configuration on a crystal) … our typical human response is to think of climbing inside the crystal, and that it would be like entering a room (like a hexagonal fish tank)… with walls and boundaries. HOWEVER… Venus says this isn’t how it works. Once you enter the “world” of the crystal, the area you may travel is infinite… Boundless. So in the case of a Time Link to the Future, you may enter the Window with the intention of accessing future information or the future you (if you are asking a question you may seek the answer here). (If you want a refresher on Time Link or window crystals, CLICK HERE.)

CLEAR 01005It has just a bit of wispy Fairy Frost towards the base.

Fairy Frost helps to connect us to nature and Nature Deva. You may enter a crystal (the way I described above, become familiar with the look of the Fairy Frost in your particular crystal) and after entering, see what presents. If you are able to visualize in this way, you may want to explore the inside of the crystal with your eyes open. This is a form of scrying. (If you want a refresher on Fairy Frost, CLICK HERE.)

Something which I didn’t mention in the description of this particular crystal is how the sides have a bit of rust still present from before the mining and cleaning process. Crystals which still have some of the rust, or even clay, from the mine still present on them when they get to their new home, (either after having been cleaned with acid or which haven’t been cleaned with acid at all), help us to keep in mind where we come from. They help us to remember our journey (where we started and where we are now) and when we see the mineral still attached, to view it as a visible link or reminder.

The sides are heavily Lineated

Lineated sides I have saved for last. Most all crystals have sides which are Lineated, and what that means, is that there are striations across the sides or body of the crystal. This occurs during growth and nearly every crystal will have some lineation on the sides. From crystal to crystal, some crystals will have more lineation than others, and also on the same crystal, some sides may be more lineated than others. If a crystal is completely smooth on every side, chances are very good that the crystal has been polished.

Anyway, back to Lineated sides. Lineated sides can be worked with to do something called “unzipping” the crystal. To do this, you find a side which is comfortable; (usually it is one without Barnacles, Imprints, Keys or other inconsistencies), and drag a thumbnail or fingernail from the terminating end (top of the side) to the base end (bottom of the side). If you have a crystal which has two terminations (Double Terminated crystals), determine which end you feel is the dominant end and treat that as the “top”. As long as you are consistent with which way you unzip, it won’t matter on a Double Terminated crystal.

This “unzipping” lets the crystal know you are ready for more information. I experience it as a subtle opening sensation but the experience will probably be a little different for everyone. I am primarily clairsentient so I experience it as a feeling of opening. A person who is more clairvoyant may see different colors or lightness. Someone who is primarily clairaudient may hear a bell tone or something different. Someone who is claircognizant may simply know they have accessed more information.

When you are through with the session, it is polite to “zip” the crystal back up to let it know you are done for now. This is similar to hanging up the phone after saying your thanks and so-longs to your crystal. If you don’t “zip” back up, your crystal may be left hanging, wondering if you are coming back to continue or . . .?? To “zip” your crystal back up, simply drag the thumb or fingernail from bottom to top (in other words, in the direction opposite to how you unzipped).

Venus has explained this unzipping to me in this way; once you unzip a crystal, the unzipping process is also infinite. What this means is that there isn’t a finite amount of information you will gain by unzipping. I liken it to taking the lid off a box, and seeing that there is just one marble in there. You think that once you have explored the marble, you wouldn’t have any reason to open the box again, because you have seen the marble and that’s all there is. Unzipping is more like this, however; you take the lid off the box (when you “unzip”) and discover there is a hole in the bottom of the box which is open to infinity. Like Hermione’s magic tent in Harry Potter, it looks like a small pup tent on the outside, but once you enter, it can be as big as a mansion. The caveat Venus adds is that it is more like it may appear as a pup tent on the outside but when you enter, you access not simply a mansion (which is finite), but Worlds… infinity. So you may unzip the same crystal once or one hundred or one thousand times, and there will always and ever be “more” opening, like an onion with an infinite number of layers to peel back. (If you want a refresher on Lineated Sides, CLICK HERE.)

This is basically just the beginning of the enjoyment you may experience with one crystal. Imagine that every crystal you have or every new crystal you adopt, you can go through this multi-layered process of discovery. Not just the unzipping, which happens to be on our mind since we just finished discussing it, but also each special configuration that your crystal has, like this one does, such as being a Transmitter with Keys, Imprints, Fairy Frost, and Bridges, but also with crystals which may have all these things plus Record Keepers, Sigils, Phantoms, and more.

There is so much to know about crystal, so much to explore. If it seems overwhelming, start with the big picture ideas such as getting to know the energy by using the “check in” described above. Learn to determine when and how the crystal “speaks” to you based on your particular “clair” (clairvoyant (clear seeing), clairaudient (clear hearing), clairsentient (clear feeling), or claircognizant (clear knowing). Next, learn to unzip for more information. And then you might work through each of the different metaphysical configurations and how they apply to your situation, Bridges to connect here to there, Keys to unlock answers, Windows to access portals, Fairy Frost to connect to Nature and Deva, etc.

It is my hope that in describing these different metaphysical configurations that you will discover the infinite possibilities of working with your crystal friends!

The MOHS Scale of Hardness in a Nutshell

MOHS_blog-imageThis is just a quick (as in not in depth) discussion of the MOHS scale of hardness. The MOHS scale was developed by (and subsequently named after) Freiderich Mohs in 1812. It is one way a geologist (or a rockhound) to determine what type of stone they might have. It is based on using one stone to scratch another, and since this has all be done and recorded, I prefer to look up the stone online to see what its hardness is. However if you are in the field and want to know what type of mineral you may be looking at, you might use the MOHS scratch test.

The hardness of quartz crystal on the MOHS scale of hardness is a 7. For an excellent in-depth description of what exactly the MOHS scale of mineral hardness is, here’s a website. In a nutshell, the MOHS scale is a way of rating the hardness of a mineral based on its ability to scratch the mineral below it. This is in order to determine which mineral class the stone is question might be in. Rated on a scale from 1 to 10, 1 (the softest) is Talc (think talcum powder), and 10 (the hardest) is Diamond. Each mineral on the scale is able to “scratch” the mineral below it. The scale is:

  1.  Talc (examples: Talc, Soapstone)
  2.  Gypsum (examples: Alabaster, Satin Spar, Selenite)
  3.  Calcite
  4.  Flourite
  5.  Apatite
  6.  Orthoclase (examples: Adularia, Moonstone)
  7.  Quartz (examples: Amethyst, Aventurine, Chalcedony [Agates] and more)
  8.  Topaz
  9.  Corundum (examples Ruby, Sapphire)
  10.  Diamond

Another way to determine or use a scratch test is by understanding and using the hardness of common objects, this list is as such:

  1. Fingernail, 2 – 2.5 (a fingernail can scratch talc)
  2. copper – 3 (a sharpened penny could scratch a fingernail)
  3. Nail – 4 (a nail could scratch a penny)
  4. Glass – 5.5 (glass could scratch a nail)
  5. Knife Blade – 5 – 6.5 (a knife could scratch glass)
  6. Steel File – 6.5 (a steel file could scratch a (non-steel) knife)
  7. Streak Plate (bathroom tile) 6.5 – 7 (a piece of bathroom tile could scratch a file)
  8. Quartz 7 (quartz could scratch a bathroom tile)

Serious rock hounders used to carry a “streak test” kit, which was a collection with one example of each of the types of stones in it to use when rockhounding (or once they got home). There is a process of how to properly “scratch” the stone in question, and then by following other clues (such as color or shape, and where they discovered the stone), the person could determine what type of stone they might have found. Now, since we have the internet, it is much easier to look it up, and they also make sets of tools, each tip with the corresponding hardness of the mineral in each category. Personally I have never been able to bring myself to scratch the surface of any stone just to determine what it is (seems so destructive!) However this is the way the MOHS scale of hardness was created.

Why would it be important to know about the MOHS scale? As just ONE example, if you typically wear stones which are soft (anywhere under quartz) more care will need to be taken when cleansing. You might not want to rub an opal necklace after a trip to the beach (or even to wear it at the beach, actually)… Sand is comprised of a great deal of quartz. So imagine what might happen to your opal (or moonstone) necklace or ring if you rubbed it if there were grains of sand on the surface? Another example is if you were going to etch runes onto a crystal or even onto a piece of glass… you would need a diamond tip bit in order to do this. Several diamond tip bits, actually!

This has just been a bit of information on rock hounding. If you have found this post interesting and would like to know more, a Google search on the MOHS scale would work, or here is a good article written by Hobart King on the website geology.com.

GENN’S NEW BOOK IS READY ! CRYSTAL MANDALAS: Anatomy & Physiology of Quartz Crystals (Volumes 1 – 4) COLORING BOOKS!

Crystal Mandalas: Anatomy and Physiology of Quartz Crystals, Volume 1 by Genn John

Crystal Mandalas: Anatomy and Physiology of Quartz Crystals, Volume 1

Well, you might have noticed I have been a little quiet lately. I’ve been madly working on finishing my latest series of books. They are currently at the printer and will arrive next week! I wanted to get them finished for a workshop I will be teaching in Fayetteville (Arkansas) for the Ozark Research Institute’s 28th Annual Dowsing & Alternative Health Convention on April 15th through 18th. (I will be writing a blog post about this in case some of you can attend!) I will also be in Hot Springs in May at the Crystal and Crystal Skull Festival  (also talking about the new books and doing crystal readings). Anyway, the books are AVAILABLE NOW for pre-order. (You can click here to open a new tab to the order page.)

I’ve been working on this series for a couple of years now, and of course, all my friends, when they saw the great hullaballoo about the “adult coloring books”, were on me to “HURRY HURRY HURRY, Genn!! Get your book out!”  Well, while I agreed that “striking while the iron was hot” seemed the smart thing to do, first, I didn’t want the books to be confused as “just another coloring book in a vast sea of coloring books” and second, (and more important) I wanted them to be exactly right. Also, while the series ARE books which you color, they are FAR MORE than just “coloring books”. They are learning books. Relaxing books. A way to make learning the nuances of quartz crystal easy, fun, and memorable. There is something magical about opening the right-brain, or creative side, that helps to bring the logical, or linear, left-brain side into more clear focus. This is what I hope to achieve with this series of books.

The crystal mandalas came about as a way to make understanding the “anatomy” (form) and “physiology” (function) of quartz crystal both easy and fun. The thought was inspired by the anatomy coloring books that I and many other nurses, massage therapists and others in the health care industry use to learn human anatomy. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the anatomy coloring book, it is a coloring book consisting of drawings of the systems (skeletal, muscular, etc) and descriptions with labels, all of which you color in as you learn.

Here’s an example of the Cathedral/Lightbrary mandala.

Crystal Mandalas: Anatomy and Physiology of Quartz Crystals, Volume 1: CATHEDRAL

Crystal Mandalas: Anatomy and Physiology of Quartz Crystals, Volume 1: CATHEDRAL

The books are 11″ x 11″ and each mandala has its own page. Each volume is coil bound so they will lay flat for coloring. I have included two of each type of crystal mandala, (e.g. two Artemis, two Barnacle, two Bridge, and so on), so that if you decide to take a mandala out of the book after you color it, you will still have one in the book for reference. To highlight the possible variations, each individual mandala features two different drawings of the type crystal featured. There is also a short description of the most prominent features of each. Because there are so many different configurations of quartz crystal in this series (46 in all), I have chosen to split the series into four volumes.

Here’s a little preview of the covers and the first 4 mandalas in each volume.

Crescent City, California December 1981

Crescent City, California December 1981

I started picking up rocks with my Granny on our summer vacations to Crescent City, California. We would pick up the agate on the beach. Sometimes we would lay in the pebbles and sift through them, holding them up to the sunlight to see which were most translucent. The top layer, dried by the sun, (which beckoned us to sit and dig) was deceptive. The sea water would seep up from the under layer and soak our knees and elbows. When the agates we found dried, we would lick them to rediscover the shine.

Granny collected patches and buttons from her travels and sewed them on her favorite rock hounding jacket. She would giggle as she pointed out her favorite button (which I still have… somewhere). It says in bold print: “I’m an Agate Licker”… you can imagine the stares she used to get from wearing that one!

My grandparents were both avid rock hunters, members of their local Gem and Mineral society, traveling the United States after their retirement, collecting gemstones of all types and varieties. I can remember how proud I was when they allowed me to tag along on one of the group digs. We were looking for hematite or rhodonite or some other “ite”… I don’t even remember now… It was over 40 years ago (EEK!). Scrambling over logs that crossed rushing creeks, wandering about for hours, having no idea what I was looking for and having the time of my life. I learned my first rock term that day, as I picked up so many of them, asking if it was the particular “ite” we were looking for… “No, that’s a Leaverite”, they would say. “What is Leaverite and why aren’t we picking that up too?”, I asked innocently. Laughing at my having fallen for their inside joke, they would then reveal, “It is a Leaverite because you’re supposed to Leave ‘er right there!”

Genn and Renee

They also dug antique bottles from old home sites. My grandpa used his metal detector to search the edges of the woods for the “scrap pile”, where the previously discarded bottles were to be found. Granny and I would pick up the rusted and bent square nails which were handcrafted so many years ago. What they were going to do with it all was beyond me. It didn’t matter. It was the thrill of the find. It was such an adventure to rumble down old wagon trails, slowly bouncing in and out and around ruts and potholes and rubbing so close to rain-moistened ferns and leaf-covered tree limbs on each side that we had to pull our arms back as they lashed at open windows.

They also had claim to five gold-mining sites in the Trinity National Forest, on Mule Creek. Summers were spent there in the cool-dark woods, knee-deep in the icy cold stream, playing in the summers’ heat and panning for gold. We would shake the dirt off the moss growing under the roots of trees on the creek bank that had been eroded away by high water the previous winter. Squatting in the rocks and pebbles at the waters edge, we would swirl the water over the dirt in our gold pans with the rhythmic swish swish swish, carefully washing away the brown dirt and debris, looking to reveal the black sand where the gold was typically found, and then hoping to find gold, heaviest of all, which would settle to the bottom.

Genn’s sister with the noisy dredge

At the end of the day, we would marvel at the nuggets my Grandpappy would reveal from a long day of dredging from under bedrock in the deep creek holes and beds. This almost made the constant drone of the gas engine seem worth the intrusion into the peaceful green dogwood canopy surroundings. My sister and I would proudly show off our tiny glass jars filled with water and gold specks while we ate hot-dogs and marshmallows beside the campfire.

On the most odd occasion, a black bear would surprise us by making his presence known. My sister and I, straining for a closer look, were quickly shushed into the travel trailer by Granny. At this sudden panic by our grandparents, realizing our peril, my sister and I stood, stock still, breathing shallowly, as if not to alert the bear to our presence, our mouths open and our eyes darting around, watching the bear and waiting for the all clear. I Googled “California black bear Trinity National Forest” below is a picture that was closest to what we saw that day).

California black bearOf course, the bear would amble off, as unaware of us as he was when he appeared from the dark woods. For days, the hiking restriction which was “within eyesight of the camp”, was strictly enforced and to be followed without exception. As kids do, we would slowly push our boundaries as far as we could, until we were pulled back by the reminder of the bears and other dangers lurking about. The feeling of fear easily faded and we would spend weeks hoping for another “sighting”.

I wouldn’t trade the memories of those summers spent rock hounding and gold-digging for anything in the world. They hooked me on minerals and stones like an addict to a drug… enter quartz crystals…

During all this time, the summers that were spent visiting my grandparents in Northern California, I lived on a farm in the Sacramento River Valley, about 2 & 1/2 hours North of Sacramento. In the early eighties, my grandparents partitioned off an acre in our field, where they built a house, so they could be closer to us. They continued their rock hounding, but since Grandpap was now retired from the Forest Service, they were able to travel, and expand their mineral lust beyond the Trinity National Forest to include the entire United States.

They used to drive from California out to Arkansas and mine for crystal for weeks at a time. They had to ship it back by UPS because there was too much to carry back in their car.

I can still remember the huge clusters and points, laid out on the tables that Grandpappy made in the front yard, rows and rows of them, four feet wide and 20 to 30 feet long. They were more like frames, really, with wire mesh for tops, so the rain would wash through as it cleaned the clay off the crystals. The spikes and shining points glimmered and flashed like diamonds in the hot California sunshine…

Genn’s Granny

If I wasn’t before, now I was hooked for sure. The thrill of adventure and the anticipation of the unknown is still with me, urging me on every time I pick up a new stone.

Even though it’s been well over 20 years since she made her transition back to Spirit, I will always maintain my connection with my grandmother through my closeness with Mother Earth. I hear her in the breeze when I walk along the beach. I feel her every time I bend over to pick up a stone. I see her every time I hold an agate up to the sun.

Thanks for sharing my journey! Was there something special that “sparked” your journey into the mineral kingdom!? Share!

EIGHT-SIDED FACE or GROUNDING CRYSTAL – stop, refocus and ground

This week we’ll be discussing Eight-Sided face or Grounding crystals.

eight-sided face

Eight-Sided face is a crystal shape that falls into the category of crystals of which you must count the edges of the main face, as we discussed with Channeling crystals.

As a reminder, we need to discuss faces (also called facets) and edges of faces.

anatomy of a crystal

Remember that the edges of the faces are the boundaries of each face (or facet). Structurally, quartz crystal has six sides and six facets, and the “main face” is the largest face. Here’s a reminder of counting edges:

counting edges of faces

In the image above, there is only 7 faces, an Eight-Sided face crystal has…. EIGHT! Surprise! You may have noticed the name Eight-Sided Face and wondered why it isn’t called “Eight-Edged Face”. It is because edges of faces are also called sides. I know. I can hear what you’re thinking; “Geeze, Genn! We have sides of the crystal and sides of the face! Will I ever figure this out?!” Hang in there, you can do this! You will count the edges of the face, but then you will call them sides. In this case, Eight-SIDED face.

eight-sided face

As I said, these crystals are also called Grounding crystals, and they have eight edges on the main face. If you remember, I said generally crystals have 6 sides and 6 faces. While it isn’t uncommon to have seven edges to a face, in the case of Eight-Sided Face crystals, there is an extra edge. This is a rare occurrence (there are still only six sides on the body and six faces on the termination of these crystals).

eight-sided-face shapesGenerally the Eight-Sided Face crystals are symmetrical (more like a “Stop Sign”) but they may be in any shape (as the crystals in the example above), as long as there are 8 edges. A more desirable Eight-Sided Face, Grounding crystal, will be more similar in shape to a stop sign.

What kind of energy does an Eight-Sided Face or Grounding crystal bring to the table? As the name implies, they are good for grounding. A stop sign also has eight sides; use this to remember that these crystals help you to stop and ground. I like to put my thumb on the grounding face (the largest face) and use it that way. You may also press and hold the grounding face to ground energy in any chakra.

eight-sided-face STOP SIGNAn Eight-Sided Face crystal may have some of the sides missing due to crystal Imprints or damage. You can extrapolate and count edges. These crystals still have the energy of a Grounding crystal.

eight-sided-face extrapolate

When might a person choose to work with the energy of an Eight-Sided Face or Grounding crystal? If you are feeling spacey or flighty, not quite all the way in-body… any time you feel the need to be more grounded is a good time to work with this crystal. To revisit just a few ways one might do this:

1. MEDITATE TOGETHER you may want to meditate with your crystal, it is best to cleanseclear and program your crystal with specific intent so you both are on the same page. I find that if I am working with an Eight-Sided Face or Grounding crystal, I will put my finger on the main face, and press or rub the face as I connect to the grounding energy.

2. MAKE A GRID you may want to make a grid, featuring the Grounding crystal to assist that energy. If you only have one Eight-sided Face crystal, place this crystal in the center of the grid. If you have more than one, you can put them at the cardinal points as well as the center, etc.

3. CARRY IT WITH YOU in a medicine pouch, pocket, purse or as jewelry.

Today we’ve learned that:

  • Eight-Sided Face crystals can only be determined by counting edges of the main (largest) face
  • Grounding crystals may be symmetrical or not, the energy is grounding regardless
  • An Eight-Sided Face crystal may be missing edges due to crystal Imprints or damage, but the energy is still grounding
  • The eight-sided face, similar to a stop sign will help you to remember to “stop and ground”
  • Work with the energy of an Eight-Sided Face or Grounding crystal any time you are feeling flighty, disconnected or too much in your upper chakras.

I hope you have enjoyed this discussion about Eight-Sided Face or Grounding quartz crystals; what they are, how to determine if you have one, and how to work with them. Next time we’ll discuss Elestial or Elestiated quartz crystals.
